Twilight Sparkle is the main character of the lovely show My Little Pony. She, at first glance, is a studious, overthinking, bookworm who leads the group of 6.
I would completely argue that, out of most of the characters in the show, Twilight is a reflection of everyone in life. She, as a character, is often stressed by a lot of things that happen around and to her.
What is annoying about the hate is that when she is getting stressed or crashing out, she is very often hated. Usually, she just overreacts when she is stressed. But all of them were completely valid. In season 7 episode 22, Twilight gets completely upset because she missed the constellation that she had waited for. Because of that, she starts crying and lashes out at the others who are talking about how beautiful it was.
But something that people don’t realize about her struggles is the fact that almost all of them are caused by emotional patterns. Something that the main 6 tends to ignore. Often times Twilights emotions are undermined and seen as overreacting by the people around her. In season 2 episode 3 titled Lesson Zero Twilight starts panicking over the fact that she doesn’t have a friendship lesson ready for Princess Celestia, and when she tells her friends about this, they just brush her off, saying it’s not that big of a deal. Twilight, becoming extremely stressed, ends up accidentally making a problem because she’s so stressed.
I think she is hated because she’s also seen as a “show off” and is “overpowered compared to the rest of the main 6”. While I would argue that it was very much hinted that she was going to be the princess of friendship, as her element of harmony is literally a crown.
She is a character who often falls victim to the fact that the main characters of movies or tv shows are often hated completely, for being the main character. Which I think is a huge part of the hate. As people tend to forget that there is a reason she is the main character.
I think the more people mature, the more they start to understand and sympathize with Twilight Sparkle. She, as a character, is a reflection of a lot of the people now in the world. Showing off a lot more complex and untalked-about emotions. The ones people don’t like to have characters to have. She gets upset, she lashes out, and she has a hard time connecting well with other ponies. Something so relatable yet untalked about in a lot of media, especially in children’s shows. It’s clear that Twilight struggles with major anxiety, and the fact that an estamated 31.1% (NIMH) of adults have struggled with anxiety in their life, she as a character is a great way to connect the older audience to her.
