After a drought hit the Danube River in Serbia, sunken German battleships appeared from the lowering water levels. Sadly, just like the Titanic, there is a lot of interest in these wrecks, causing many parts of them to go missing as they are stolen very quickly. These vessels are from the Nazi Black Sea fleet from 1944. Soviet forces were advancing on the river, so the Nazis sank their own ships to clog the river and halt the Soviets; they also did this to prevent German tech from falling into the Soviet hands. Around 20 ships were found, and are thought to still contain bombs and weapons, which could be dangerous. Removing the WWII ships was estimated to cost around $30 million by the Serbian Government, and there are still ongoing efforts to remove them. They sadly also make the already difficult to navigate Danube even smaller due to the problem of running into the wrecks. This problem isn’t just in the Serbia part of the Danube, similar ships are also resurfacing in Hungary. These ships could cause danger to thousands of civilians in Europe, and are polluting a major river with hazardous chemicals.
